Tension headaches are classified as muscle contraction headaches, and are mostly caused by stress. Although a tension headache is generally less severe than a migraine, the pain usually occurs at both sides of the head and lasts throughout the day, causing extreme irritability and insomnia.

Migraines are often hereditary, and about three times more common in women than in men. A migraine headache is classified as a vascular headache, and is less common than a tension headache. A migraine is caused by the enlargement of blood vessels combined with the release of chemicals. This can lead to pain, inflammation, and swelling of the temporal artery.

Migraine pain is mostly present on one side of the head, though very occasionally, pain may develop on both sides of the head. Migraine pain is often accompanied by other symptoms like nausea, vomiting, and sensitivity to light, odors, or sounds. The pain can last up to three days, and the best remedy is usually just to lie down in a quiet and dark room.

In about 20% of migraine attacks, sufferers experience an aura before the onset of a migraine. An Aura is characterized of sparkling or flashing lights and dots, distorted vision, blind spots, and changes in smell.
